Cheltenham Tigers Ladies XV – History

The ladies team at Cheltenham RFC was formed in December 1991, whilst the Club was based at P.O.W.S.

Their first captain was Fiona Murphy and initial coaches were Rob Clarke and Roger Brown from the men’s premier side.

Despite many people claiming that women’s rugby would not stand the test of time, the section celebrated its 25th Anniversary in style in 2016.

Tammy Shakespeare was presented with a certificate of merit by Mayor Duncan Smith in recognition of 25 years loyal service to the team.

Today the ladies XV are the highest placed team in north Gloucestershire, competing at Ladies Championship level against such famous clubs as Richmond, Wasps and Saracens. Last season (2015-16) they finished a very creditable 3rd place in the league table.

The Ladies section at the Town Club has grown in strength over the years, now fielding a 2nd/development XV, and coaching girls at under 13, 15 and 18 levels at Newlands Park.

In 2015 BBC Sports commentator Jill Douglas became Ladies President.
